Russian govt controls situation with GM, ready to help workers

YAROSLAVL, Mar 27 (PRIME) -- The Russian government controls the situation with U.S. General Motors (GM) leaving the market and will help its workers to find new jobs, Deputy Prime Minister Olga Golodets told reporters Friday.

“The situation is under a tough control, there is demand for workforce today, and even if there is a staff layoff, we will help people to find jobs of their qualification or even help them change qualification if they like,” Golodets said.

There are companies that even under current conditions express interest in expanding business. “Skoda is among them. They said they would like to participate in the employment program by hiring new people, announced 200 new jobs,” she said speaking about an employment program for the republic of Tatarstan.

GM said on March 18 it will cease operations in the country. It halted industrial assembly at its car plant in St. Petersburg, will suspend contract car assembly at a plant of Russian carmaker GAZ Group in Nizhny Novgorod and withdraw Opel models and Chevrolet mass models from the market.
